St. Patrick's Day Celebration  St. Patrick's Day was Celebrated on Wednesday, March 13th. Everyone enjoyed a meal of corned beef, cabbage and red potatoes with a special dessert from McDonalds, Shamrock shake, yummy!! In March our Community Based Prevocational Skills Class toured a couple of different locations - In March our Community-Based class toured a couple of different locations. The first one was a tour of Hope Gospel Mission and Thrift store. Our Case Manager, Kelsey, set up the tour and took the class on a wonderful tour of the thrift store and the shelter side of Hope Gospel. Our class loved the tour, they found the shelter side the most interesting. We hope to get back there and learn more about their Mission.  Our next tour in March was at L.E. Phillips Public Library in Eau Claire. Our class took a long tour exploring the newly built library. Some highlights included the local art gallery, creator space, and the library of things. We also asked many questions about working at the library, and our tour guide complimented us on how great our questions were. We even got to see how the automatic book sorter works!  Community-Based also toured Dollar Tree in the month of March. This tour was a shorter one, but we learned a lot while there. Our class asked great questions and received insightful answers from Dollar Tree management. Our class also got the opportunity to see how a new employee would be trained and met the trainer! The last placed toured this month was Sam's Club. Patti, one of the store managers, gave us an excellent tour! She talked about all the different positions in the store including cafe associates, cashiers, team leads, stockers, jewelry associates, tire technicians, pharmacy technicians, and the Maintenace department (cleans up spills and works on things that are broken. They also spend an hour cleaning the bathrooms each morning). All three clients were interested in applying at Sam’s Club! Patti said that all applications are on-line. Overall, it has been a great month for Community-Based! Carter Lage was Featured in a Podcast March 15, 2024  This is a first, Receptionist/Marketing Assistant, Carter Lage, had just got featured in a Podcast called “Elwood City Limits”, Episode 227: I will Not Acknowledge Raisins. Carter shared his thought on what Will Young and Lucas Mancini were discussing about in his own honest opinion, about Arthur Season 20 Episode 2, “Fern’s Flights of Fancy” and “Cereal”. His autism disability, his life, his future career of wanting to become a children’s author and illustrator like the creator of Arthur, Marc Brown, and his work at L.E. Phillips Career Development Center. “It was really nice to be featured on the Elwood City Limits Podcast as the first voice recording guest host! I really wanted that to happen, and it did! It’s like we would have cereal for breakfast while telling our stories on National Librarian’s Day on April 16th. I still hope to become a children’s author and illustrator like the creator of Arthur, Marc Brown", Carter Lage said. We give honor to our good friend, Carter Lage, and we hope he can reach his goals to become a children’s author and illustrator. Congratulations Ryan!  Ryan has worked at L.E. Phillips Career Development Center for six years, where he gained a variety of useful skills and work habits that prepared him for future employment opportunities. Ryan stated, “The things I learned at CDC is how to be a good worker, how to communicate, and many different tasks that are helpful to be successful!” We wish him all the best! Forklift Experience 101 With the support of Project Search, this month CDC restarted a “Forklift Experience 101” program. During this two-day experience, a student had the chance to learn how to operate a forklift and get some great hands-on experience. The first half of the experience included some time in the classroom learning about safety, the different jobs that utilize forklifts, and their unique capabilities. Then, our woodshop and shipping supervisors began the hands-on portion of the experience. During this time, the student got a feel for driving a forklift, picking up loads, transporting them, and safely setting them down. The CDC is happy to be able to provide this experience and help our staff develop skills that will help them in their future endeavors. Wisconsin Special Olympics Spring Season They did it!! Our special Olympians, Kent Kohlhepp and Nate Stygar are going to state!! Both teams came in second place at the Northern Sectional Team Basketball Competition on Sunday March 17th at UW Stevens Point. Kent and the Wolverines won their first game against Miracles of Difference Wolverines 18-12 and lost their second game to Barron County 6-16. Nate and the Bucks also won their first game against the Clippers 36-12 but lost their second game to another Barron team 13-16. The Spring Games State competition will be held April 12-14 at UW Oshkosh. Good Luck to all three of our State bound Special Olympians, Kent Kohlhepp, Nate Stygar, and Sara Fellenz! Easter Fun Once again, the Easter Bunny hopped over to CDC to spread some Easter joy. Staff had fun posing for pictures and taking a chance to “hunt” for a colored egg from the grass filled Easter Basket - the color of the egg determined the prize they won. Staff also enjoyed a delicious cupcake made by our baker, Linda! Wishing everyone a wonderful Easter filled with joy and happiness!!
